The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) Mr. Mike Omeri has called for increased awareness on issues surrounding the changes in climate which has led to a new cycle of nature around the world.
The DG spoke when he granted audience to the National Stakeholders Advisory Board of the Climate Change Network Nigeria led by its chairman and African Union Advisor on Climate Change, Dr. Victor Fodeke.
The board is an advocacy group seeking for the adaptation of the fourth Assesment Report of the inter-governmental panel on climate change, which will turn the predictions of adversity into opportunity for the development of the environment.
According to the DG who was represented by the Director of Political and Civic Education in the Agency, Afam Anene, the drive towards adaptation to climate change must evolve as a mass action by most members of the population. He identified this strategy as informing the Agency’s campaign for clean environment and the planting of trees.
In his words: “The NOA is a foremost organization for the promotion of development in the cycle of nature. That is why just recently, the DG set up a Climate Change Unit to drive the awareness campaign of the Agency for what is going on in the atmosphere. We have similarly launched the Do the Right Thing: Avoid Dirt; and Do The Right Thing: Plant a Tree campaign, just to sensitize our people on the changes of nature around our environment.”
Earlier, the leader of the team, Dr. Fodeke, had outlined urgent issues in the global campaign on climate change, urging the NOA to step up its communication tactics to ensure that new climatic situations do not result in calamities for the people of Nigeria.
Dr. Fodeke said the network is composed of one hundred and fifty groups working to make Nigeria a climate friendly country with sustainable green development that guarantees the safety of the ecosystem.
